The purpose of the Huhtamaki Circular Economy Start-up Program by Food System 6 is to accelerate the development of young and promising companies working to deliver innovative sustainable solutions in areas such as waste management, sustainable packaging alternatives, new materials innovation, and regenerative production models. Originally a city girl, a lawyer by training, now a proud farmer, Emma Weston CEO and Co-Founder of AgriDigital, is the consummate entrepreneur. She co-founded AgriDigital to use technology to ensure greater transparency and profitability across grain supply chains. We’re talking about the winners --and losers--from a shift to shorter and transparent supply chains.
Emma’s response to who is asking for transparency? Everyone. In a globalized food system that has divorced us from the source of our food, verifiable data enables farmers to shift from price takers to value creators, allows consumers to buy with confidence--and implicates every step of the supply chain in between. By looking at trends in agtech over the past centuries, Emma charts a vision for the future of agtech innovation. FS6 Community News and Updates Last week Monday, FS6 held our Cohort 5 culminating event as part of the Regenerative Food Systems Investment Forum. During the 2-hr event, FS6 was proud to showcase the incredible work of our six Cohort 5 companies - featuring a short storytelling video from each, followed by a pitch, and audience Q&A. In other FS6 news, our fearless leader and CEO, Caesaré Assad, was officially selected as one of the top 20 Emerging Leaders in Food & Ag! We are incredibly proud of her and all of the work she has done over the years to make this world a more just, healthy, and sustainable one for all. 2020, despite all the hardship, has had its moments of brightness. Over the 8 weeks of application outreach and selection for the upcoming Huhtamaki Circular Economy Startup Program by FS6, we heard from an expansive group of innovators from around the world and across many sectors of the circular economy. Applications came in from 51 countries and ranged from small-scale big-impact regional solutions to large-scale global innovations.
These solutions represented many of the leaders of our present and future food system and, as such, provided an incredible opportunity for learning and a preview into what may come next in the evolution of the circular economy. Here are some insights that we have gathered through this process about what is happening around the world to usher in a more sustainable and circular future for our planet and its inhabitants: Journey with us into the history of coffee and the realities of social enterprise with our guide Mokhtar Alkanshali, founder of Port of Mokha. A Yemeni-American, Mokhtar shares the extraordinary path that led him to build a vertically integrated coffee company in Yemen in the midst of political turmoil and civil war. Mokhtar takes on the skeptics asking why we should care about specialty coffee: by shortening the distance between consumers and producers they are improving the quality of coffee and the lives of farmers.

FS6 is a nonprofit based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose mission is to support impact-driven entrepreneurs as they transform how we grow, produce, and distribute food. The organization runs a comprehensive accelerator program that mentors entrepreneurs by coaching them through a wide range of business and organizational needs.
